The original 1944 Mai Tai has its roots in Oakland, California.  The story goes that a visitor tasted Victor Bergeron's creation (The 'Vic' in 'Trader Vic') and proclaimed the Tahitian expression “Maita’i roa ae" (The best!) and the name stuck.  The original Wray & Nephew 17 Rum is long gone, so we offer you the 1944 Hawaiian Mai Tai featuring two rums of our islands.

This classic is "spirit forward" where the Kō Hana Agricole and Kōloa Rums are the stars of the show, supported by Giffard Orgeat (Almond Syrup), Torres Magdala Orange Liqueur and (always fresh) lime juice.

The 1944 Hawaii Mai Tai

  • 1 oz   Kō Hana Oahu Agricole Kea
  • 1 oz   Kōloa Kaua'i dark rum
  • 1/2 oz Giffard Orgeat
  • 1/2 oz Torres Magdala Orange Liqueur
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice **
  • 2 dashes Australian Orange Bitters

    Shake or swizzle all ingredients with ice, pour into a double old-fashioned glass. Fill glass with with crushed ice.  Garnish with mint sprigs and a spent lime half.
